Founded in 1994 by Sushma Mehta, Shamaa Dance Company is a multi-cultural dance company specialising in Kathak - a South Asian classical dance form. The members of Shamaa Dance reflect the cultural diversity of London's population.
The aim of Shamaa Dance Company is to maintain a balance between preserving traditional material and creating new works by deconstructing and restructuring the vocabulary of South Asian Dance taking on board contemporary sensibilities.
Equal emphasis is placed on performance and work in education and the community. The training in Kathak will help improve posture, develop co-ordination and enhance graceful movement in a dance form that embodies beauty and soul.
